A fine quality mahogany 8 day longcase clock by James Love of Edinburgh, circa 1785.
Case
The beautifully proportioned flame mahogany veneered case of typical Edinburgh design with boxwood shell inlay to the trunk door flanked by reeded quarter columns. The similarly inlaid canted corner figured base with a raised single moulding and shaped bracket feet. The swan-neck pediment hood with ornate brass paterae and three cast brass finials, beneath fretted ”Edinburgh panels”. The glazed hood door flanked by turned and reeded wooden columns terminating with brass capitals, corresponding half turned columns to the rear of the hood with wooden capitals and glazed movement viewing windows.
The original lock and brass hinges to the trunk door.
An elegant case in fine original condition with excellent quality veneers of good colour and patination.
Dial
The arched painted dial finely executed with bold Roman numerals and an outer minute track with Arabic numerals to the quarters and diamond markings.
The dial corners beautifully decorated with brightly coloured flowers with gold leaf border.
The arch with gilded painted wheat sheaf inscribed in Latin ”Deus Munificus” and flanked by garlands of flowers.
Subsidiary date and seconds zone to the dial centre, signed to the centre James Love Edinburgh.
Movement
The high quality movement is of eight day duration, the plates united by four knopped pillars, anchor escapement and striking the hours on a single bell.
The movement is fully restored by our horologist who works exclusively for us.
Our horologist is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI), having 50 years of full time professional engagement in the repair & restoration of clocks, watches, music boxes & barometers. He was the recipient of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Bronze Medal.
