Antique Wall Clocks

A wall clock is any weight of spring driven clock made to hang on a wall, therefore the category covers a wide range of styles.

The first hooded wall clocks dated from the last quarter of the 17th century, the style of these clocks is similar to a longcase clock but without the trunk.

Most English round dial clocks are simple timepiece clocks with a high quality spring driven fusee movement.

The earlier examples of English fusee wall clocks have silvered and engraved brass dials with moulded mahogany surrounds, progressing through the 19th century to the convex painted dial which became fashionable and latterly flat painted iron dials with more simple mahogany or oak surrounds.

Trunk dial clocks or drop dial clocks have the addition of a trunk or box under the dial to accommodate longer pendulums. This type of clock started to appear around 1780, with the early clocks having mahogany bases sloping back, commonly known as a chisel foot.

Gradually the cases became more decorative with the addition of inlay and features such as winged ears to the trunk sides.

Story Clocks stock a wide range of antique Wall Clocks which are expertly restored and chosen for their authenticity and decorative appeal.

A fine quality 8 day English fusee timepiece trunk dial wall clock by James Hargraves of Bawtry circa 1820.
