A good quality oak longcase clock by Joseph Hallifax of Barnsley c.1750

  • Maker: Joseph Hallifax of Barnsley is recorded in Loomes 'Clockmakers of Northern England' book as being born in 1728 and died in 1762. The Hallifax family of clockmakers are well documented and produced some fine clocks and distinctive barometers.

Case

A good quality oak 30 hour longcase clock by Joseph Hallifax of Barnsley, circa 1750.
The slender proportioned case constructed of finely figured quarter sawn oak, crossbanded with pollard oak. The caddy topped hood with attached turned columns terminating with gilded wooden capitals beneath. The box base surmounted on shaped bracket feet.

Dial

The square brass dial with finely matted centre and ringed decoration, with silvered Roman chapter ring and date zone, surrounded by cast spandrels, signed Joseph Hallifax Barnsley.
The dial is in untouched patinated condition

Movement

The fine quality fully restored movement of 30 hour duration united by four
knopped pillars, with anchor escapement and striking the hours on a single bell.

Cast iron weight and brass faced bob pendulum.


Hands

Fretted blued steel hands.
